Programs launched by the Chamber in Breast Cancer Month

MANILA, Philippines – In solidarity with the country’s observance of Breast Cancer Month, several programs were held at the House of Representatives to further increase awareness of the number 1 killer disease among women.

Led by the Association of Women Legislators Foundation, Inc. (AWLFI) in partnership with Soroptimist International of Ortigas and Environs, and Philippine Cancer Society, Inc. (PCS) the Chamber held an awareness talk regarding breast and cervix health.

In the said event, it was taught how to perform a breast self-examination and there was also a free breast and cervical screening.

PCS Program Director Dr. emphasized. Romeo Marcaida the importance of early detection in breast cancer, he said, the survival rate of breast cancer patients in the Philippines is 64%, but with the help of early detection and access to medicine, it has been raised to 90%.

In this regard, AWLFI President and Bulacan Rep urged. Linabelle Ruth Villarica is the fellow legislator to ensure the funding of the Cancer Assistance Program under the Department of Health (DoH) next year.

Villarica’s appeal is also following the zero budget that the program received under the 2023 national budget after the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) did not give it an allocation, however the House did not agree to this and with the passage of the 2023 budget was allocated this with a P250 million budget.

Villarica insisted that the government should not put aside anti-cancer programs and one way to address this is by ensuring that there is funding for the programs.

“The lives of more than 27,000 Filipinos with breast cancer may depend on it,” Villarica concluded. RNA
