Comelec's 'Register anywhere' program is in the works

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) plans to include in the “Register Anywhere” program the acceptance of applications for the transfer of the register and reactivation of voters.

“We plan to include that as well, we will include all aspects of registration. It should not just be registration anywhere, if not the transfer of registration anywhere, reactivation of registration anywhere,” said Comelec Chairman George Garcia.

The Comelec explained that they want to make registration easy for all Filipinos under the “Register Anywhere” scheme, especially since the public is crowding their offices especially when the registration deadline is approaching.

“Where are you located, even if you don’t live there but you are there at that time in that area, then there is registration, you can register there,” added Garcia.

Garcia believes that there is no legal obstacle to the launch of the said program, due to the different interpretations of RA 8189 or the Continuing Registration Law.

According to Garcia, the approval of those who registered under the “Register Anywhere” scheme will still go through the election registration board hearing where anyone has the opportunity to oppose the registration of an applicant. Jocelyn Tabangcura-Domenden
