Alert level 2 raised in Mayon

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised the threat to Mayon Volcano to Alert Level 2.

This is due to increased activity in its lava dome.

In the bulletin, Phivolcs said that on October 4 they recorded an increase in the volume of the lava dome by 48,000 cubic meters from August 20.

“Ocular inspection of the summit during an aerial survey this morning confirmed the presence of freshly extruded lava at the base of the summit lava dome,” the agency added.

In the latest Phivolcs report, no volcanic earthquakes have been recorded in the past 24-hours but the public is advised not to enter the six-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone due to the possibility of a phreatic or magmatic eruption.

“This means that there is current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to phreatic eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruptions,” anang ahensya.

It can be remembered that on August 21, Phivolcs raised Alert Level 1 in Mayon Volcano. RNT/JGC
