MANILA, Philippines – Not only a discount on food and services but also a 20% discount on the penalty for traffic violations is being promoted by a lawmaker for senior citizens.
Purpose of House Bill 5402 by Laguna Rep. Rep. Dan Fernandez to amend Republic Act 7432 or the Senior Citizens Act and include a 20% discount on fines for senior citizens, particularly in Metro Manila, who will be involved in traffic violations.
“In furtherance of the laudable Filipino consciousness that our elderlies still have much to contribute to nation-building, this bill further accords our senior citizen-drivers the privilege of enjoying a discount of 20 percent on traffic fines that may be imposed upon them,” nakasaad sa explanatory note ng panukala ni Fernandez.
According to Fernandez, there are still many senior citizens who drive despite their age, which is why it is important to give them importance.
“Elderly Filipinos driving jeepneys and cabs are still common sights on the road. Many seniors also drive their apos to school, in reporting for work or simply as designated driver of the family,”dagdag pa ng solon.
At the time of enactment, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be instructed to create Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) for its implementation. Gail Mendoza
