MANILA, Philippines — Investigators are closer to identifying the killers of radio broadcaster Percival Mabasa, also known as Percy Lapid, in a dashcam video recovered from Lapid’s car.
Police Colonel Restituto Arcangel, commander and spokesperson of the special investigation task force for the case this Thursday said that the suspicious men on a motorcycle were seen in the footage near Lapid’s car before he was shot.
Gunshots are also heard in the video before the men who are suspected of murdering the victim flee.
“When we compared it to what was captured by the camera on the back of his (Lapid) car before he was shot, it matched what he was wearing when he was driving a motorcycle. That’s our point of reference there [nakuha] We have CCTV footages located along that route,” said Arcangel.
But he insisted, they still need to identify the suspects based on the videos.
“We still don’t have an identification of the suspect, except for the general description of features, estimate of height and build, but as for the identity, we are not there yet,” said Arcangel.
He announced that the dash cam footage has been submitted to the Anti-Cybercrime Unit of the Philippine National Police (PNP) for forensic examination.
The PNP assured that justice will be given to the killing of Lapid, a well-known critic of the Duterte and Marcos administrations, who was killed at the gate of a Las Piñas City village this Monday night.
Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. offered. a P500,000 reward to anyone who can provide “valuable information” on the killing of Lapid.
According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Lapid is the second journalist killed under the Marcos administration. First was radio broadcaster Rey Blanco, who was stabbed to death in Negros Oriental last September. RNT/SA
