Police respond to active shooting at Michigan hotel

(NewsNation) — Michigan Police are at the scene of an active shooting at the Hampton Inn in Dearborn.

“The situation is active and dangerous,” police said on Twitter. “Stay away from the scene.”

Shots were still being fired by the suspect as of Thursday at 1:45 p.m. local time, according to authorities. Police and officers worked to clean up the area around the hotel.

Duvall Elementary School in Dearborn, according to its website, does not allow anyone into the school building at this time.

“All our staff and students are safe and our learning and day continues,” the school said. “There will be no outside activity at DuVall.”

The University of Michigan-Dearborn tweeted about the situation and has asked people to avoid the area, but said there was no known threat to the campus at this time.

Dearborn, Michigan about 15 minutes away from Detroit.
