MANILA, Philippines – In order to ensure food security, National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Administrator Benny Antiporda proposed to implement triple cropping in irrigated agricultural lands in the country.
“Triple cropping is possible if there is good coordination between the NIA, farmers, and other stakeholders”, said Administrator Antiporda at the Irrigators Association (IA) Congress at the NIA Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation Systems (UPRIIS) on October 5, 2022 in Mavin Event Center, San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija.
The Action Man of the NIA sees the opportunity to speed up the operationalization of Oplan Karding in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA) led by Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban.
Its purpose is to promote the spirit of heroism among NIA officials, local government officials, and farmers in the operation and maintenance activities of irrigation systems, especially, canal cleaning, dredging, and desilting operations after the devastation of Super Typhoon Karding on September 26, 2022.
In this regard, Administrator Antiporda expressed his full support for the adoption of triple cropping by the Rice Granary of the Philippines in maximizing rice production and increasing national output.
He also encouraged farmer members to voice their issues and concerns in the delivery of irrigation services so that the agency can take immediate action.
Meanwhile the adoption of multiple cropping practices in irrigation systems can help alleviate hunger, lower the total cost of inputs, and control pests, weed growth, and disease spread, thus resulting in better farm management and sustainable development of the country. Santi Celario
