SPD has a lead in Percy Lapid's ambush-slay

MANILA, Philippines – The Southern Police District (SPD) announced that they have obtained a lead based on what they saw on the dash cam of the car and the cell phone of the ambushed broadcaster, Percival Mabasa, better known as Percy Lapid, who was turned over to police of the victim’s surviving family.

According to the younger brother of the victim who is also a former Manila Bulletin journalist, Roy Mabasa, they expect that the police investigation will have results within 24 hours given to the SPD by National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo to resolve the case.

This was Mabasa’s statement after the police got a lead in the footage captured by Lapid’s vehicle’s dashcam.

Mabasa added that the SPD is also studying the CCTV footage from the barangay that covers the scene to identify the suspect who was riding the motorcycle.

Based on initial reports, the man seen in the footage is believed to have shot and killed Lapid.

Meanwhile, Las Piñas police chief Col. Jaime Santos that they are still waiting for the results of the digital forensic test conducted on the cellular phone of Lapid to determine the last person the victim talked to or whether he received a death threat at that time.

Santos said that the digital forensic test can be instrumental in identifying the suspect who mercilessly shot Lapid this Monday night.

Santos added that they are currently in the process of backtracking the CCTV footage they obtained from the barangay where the Lapid shooting incident occurred. James I. Catapusan
