OFW hospital, DMW wants to legislate; Ople asked for more funds in the Senate

MANILA, Philippines – Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople asked the Senate to increase the funding for the OFW hospital currently standing in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

At the same time, Ople also asked the Senate to support the proposal to give OFWs their own charter so that its budget can be included in the General Appropriations Act.

He said the DMW asked for an amount of P500 million to fund the operation of the hospital, but the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) provided only P13 million included in the National Expenditure Program.

Meanwhile, Ople announced that the Marcos administration is planning to place OFW wards in all regional and national hospitals throughout the country while migrant workers do not have their own hospitals.

“President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos is considering having OFW wards in public hospitals to give more attention to them and their families,” according to Ople.

Ople said that the administration is currently studying where to get the funds to build their own hospital for OFWs as well as their own ward in the public hospital.

“We have an OFW Infirmary in Mabalacat, Pampanga. The land was given by the LGU while a foundation built the building. So we are asking for funds to expand its accommodation rate, which is currently 32 bed capacity but is able to treat more than 1,000 patients per month,” he explained.

He said, if such a hospital is given enough funds, a facility can be added and more patients can be admitted through a 100 bed capacity rate.

In this regard, Ople thanked the Senate after their budget reaching P15.2 billion passed through the committee level.

He said 77 percent of the P15.2 billion will go to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and 23 percent to the Office of the Secretary.

The agency also promotes giving scholarships to the children of OFWs. Ernie Reyes
