De Lima screamed in court: Ragos will testify!

MANILA, Philippines – Former Senator Leila de Lima asked the Muntinlupa court to allow former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) officer-in-charge Rafael Ragos to testify in one of the two drug-related cases he is facing filed against of the Department of Justice (DOJ).

De Lima said Ragos is one of the most important witnesses in the case filed by the DOJ against him and his former aide/bodyguard Ronnie Dayan in February 2017 accusing them of conspiracy to sell illegal drugs in he sat as justice secretary.

In his earlier affidavit and testimony submitted to the court, Ragos said that he went to De Lima’s house in Parañaque twice to deliver P10 million to the former senator in November and December of 2012 where the money he was carrying came from selling illegal drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa.

However, in his new affidavit submitted this past April 30 of this year, Ragos retracted his earlier statement against De Lima and Dayan and said that it was untrue that he delivered P10 million to De Lima’s house.

Ragos was scheduled to appear in court to testify in the case filed against De Lima and Dayan this past September 30, but the DOJ panel of prosecutors submitted a motion for reconsideration that disagrees with Ragos’ testimony.

It can be recalled that the motion submitted by Dayan’s camp was previously favored by the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 204 which is hearing the case 17-165 between him and De Lima to recall Ragos.

The court ordered De Lima’s camp to comment on the motion for reconsideration filed by the prosecution.

In the omnibus comment submitted by De Lima to the court, the former senator said that the prosecution should only welcome additional information in the interest of justice.

Ragos was once among the accused in the case facing De Lima and Dayan but was removed from being an accused when he testified to become a government witness.

In the new affidavit that Ragos submitted to the court, he said that in order to remove him as an accused in the case, former DOJ Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre forced him to sign his false testimony and affidavit in order to press De Lima and Dayan in the case. Aguirre denied it. James I. Catapusan
