On September 22nd, the first day of Tourism EXPO Japan, Shinichi Inoue, President of All Nippon Airways (ANA) gave a lecture on the theme of “Challenges to a Sustainable Aviation Industry” prior to the Tourism Ministers’ Meeting. In order to reduce CO2 emissions, he introduced the industry’s efforts to explore the use of a new fuel called SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
SAF is a general term for fuels other than petroleum-derived jet fuel, such as biofuels. Regarding SAF, Mr. Inoue said, “Conventional jet fuel was a one-way system that excavated carbon from the ground and released it into the atmosphere. It is said to be a sustainable aviation fuel because it does not increase CO2 in the atmosphere throughout its life cycle.”
However, Japanese-made SAFs have not been commercialized.
