MANILA, Philippines – Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. condemned. Zia Alonto Adiong using the design of the Kaaba, a structure in the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca which is a sacred site for Muslims around the world, as props in a dog mall event in Quezon City.
According to Adiong, the desecration of their culture should be investigated, he said someone should be held accountable for the incident so that it does not happen again.
What Adiong is referring to happened last Sunday at a pet fashion show and contest organized by a mall in Quezon City where participating dogs will walk in the competition area, one dog has a dog carrier decorated like the Kaaba.
“The Kaaba is widely considered to be the house of Allah, and the Muslim ummah turns towards its direction as they pray and perform the salah every day. It is a big mistake to use the Kaaba as props and turn it into a kennel, especially since the event has nothing to do with Islam and the lifestyle of us Muslims,” Adiong said.
“This shows not only a lack of understanding when it comes to our faith that guides our lives, but a complete disregard for our community as Muslims” dagdag pa ng mambabatas.
Adiong said the incident is a small matter for some, but for their Muslims it is a big issue because of these opportunities that when they miss it, it is a source of discrimination in their ranks.
“Violence is not just the wielding of physical force that leaves scars on another’s skin; violence also involves acts that reduce a person and their beliefs into mere spectacle and refusing to make room for understanding and inclusion that is necessary for a just society that upholds the rights of all,” ani Adiong.
Adiong asked the mall administration to investigate the incident which is a clear violation of cultural sensitivity and also urged the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos to take action to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
“We demand for accountability measures, including a clear and definite commitment to ensure that this will never happen again. This is not the first time that our belief and lifestyle as Muslims have been insulted and disregarded. I hope that we will help each other so that this does not happen again in our communities, and this will be a way for us to deepen our understanding and respect for our neighbors,” Adiong concluded.
