MANILA, Philippines- Infectious disease expert Dr. Edsel Salvana urged Filipinos this Tuesday to get the COVID-19 booster shots and continue to wear masks to experience a happier Christmas this year.
Salvana said that the COVID-19 cases have recently plateaued following a slight increase in cases in recent weeks due to the easing of the face mask mandate and the restoration of face-to-face classes.
He also emphasized the protection provided by booster shots, and announced that only four individuals out of the 16,017 new COVID-19 infections recorded this past week were identified as severe or critical cases.
“If you want to ensure a good Christmas, if we want to increase the chances of that happening, we are begging our countrymen, please get a boost so that our insurance is better, so that we don’t see case spikes even if the cases increase, the number of severe cases will remain low,” he said in a public briefing.
At least 19.7 million individuals received their booster dose out of 73.1 million fully vaccinated Filipinos.
“It is too early to say that it is okay not to wear masks outdoors because we are not even past the time when we will see the full effect of removing masks outdoors among those who are not at risk,” said Salvana. . RNT/SA
