On September 23, the West Kyushu Shinkansen “Kamome” connecting Saga Prefecture and Nagasaki Prefecture began operation. It has been about 50 years since the development plan was decided in 1973. In Kyushu, the Shinkansen opened for the first time in 11 and a half years. We hope that it will serve as a catalyst for local economies that have been impoverished by the new corona disaster and for attracting tourists.

The route is about 66 kilometers from Takeo Onsen Station in Saga Prefecture to Nagasaki, and the shortest time is 23 minutes. It is also the shortest Shinkansen in Japan.

Until now, it took about 1 hour and 50 minutes from Hakata (Fukuoka Prefecture) to Nagasaki by local express train, but changing to the Shinkansen at Takeo Onsen shortens the journey by about 30 minutes.

There are criticisms for the inconvenience of changing trains and the low cost-effectiveness despite the huge construction cost (620 billion yen), but first of all, I would like to be honest with the opening. It’s one of the few bright topics in the corona misfortune.

Kamome introduced 4 trainsets (24 cars) of “N700S”, which is the same as the latest model that is active on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. The reserved seats are spaciously arranged with 2 seats and 2 seats side by side, and the interior and exterior were designed by Eiji Mitooka, an industrial designer who worked on the luxury sleeper train “Seven Stars”.
