MANILA, Philippines – Senator Raffy Tulfo notified the Department of Health on Monday, October 3 to give the promised COVID-19 response benefits and allowances to health workers before Christmas.
The Senator said this at the hearing of the Senate committee on finance on the proposed budget of the DOH and he also emphasized the sacrifice of health workers during this pandemic.
“I hope ma’am can give it to them before Christmas. That’s their money. They worked hard for that. They bet their lives during COVID and then it’s only a small amount after all and then we’re still deprived, still stuck,” Tulfo told DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire.
“I want it given to them before Christmas time,” dagdag pa niya.
Vergeire responded that they are in contact with the Department of Budget and Management to release additional funds for health workers.
According to him, the DOH has already forwarded a request to the DBM on September 6 and 9 for it to release the funds for health workers that will reach P11 billion and P1 billion.
“Hopefully po, DBM has mentioned to us, they might release funds today, so we’ll be able to provide our healthcare workers [their] allowance,” ani Vergeire.
He also called on lawmakers to help them allocate more funds to healthcare workers’ benefits that he recently announced had been cut significantly in the proposed 2023 budget.
“Kami po sa DOH would really want to provide all the benefits due to our healthcare workers. Unfortunately, we need additional funds. We have arrears to our healthcare workers which spans from July 2021 until this time. Meron kaming utang na P64 billion sa kanila dahil may retroactive provision ang ating RA for emergency allowance,” aniya.
Tulfo gave a promise that he would help for this. RNT/JGC
