MANILA, Philippines – Senator Pia Cayetano is explaining to the Department of Education how the agency will use the P150-million confidential funds under their proposed 2023 budget.
According to the lawmaker, it was only now that he experienced the DepEd asking for such a large amount of funds.
“I want to find out how those funds are being used and will they be the one to administer it and how will they use it?,” said Cayetano in an interview with ANC on Monday, October 3.
“Does it need to be that big? Because if it’s just a small thing, I think we wouldn’t have talked about anything, right?,” he added.
It can be recalled that Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte recently said that the confidential fund will be used in the agency’s programs against sexual grooming, insurgency recruitment and active shooter copycats against the youth.
Added to this is the involvement of some children in illegal drugs.
Despite this, the Senator still wants to be clear about DepEd’s role in protecting children.
“I’m just trying to get a better grasp on whether they handle these actual protective steps such that they have to handle this kind of funding and does it have to be that much?” RNT/JGC
