MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) maintained that there was no irregularity and only a “natural occurrence” that 433 bettors won the Grand Lotto draw this Saturday, October 1 with a jackpot prize of P236.091 million.
According to PCSO General Manager Melquiades Robles today, October 2, it is said that the majority of bettors stuck to the number “9” which can be considered a lucky number, including its multiples.
“Since this is a game of chance, there is no right, there is no wrong, you know that. In this case, they hit it. Their loyalty paid off, that’s why there are so many of them,” said Robles in a press conference.
The PCSO also announced that just before the draw on Saturday, many bettors had placed their numbers that all had the number “9” or multiples of it, with 33 bettors on September 20 while 264 bettors on September 26.
“We have found nothing wrong. In fact it’s a natural occurrence that there are those who take care and there are many winners when that is hit,” Robles emphasized.
“We don’t see anything to change there and we are in fact pleased that there are many winners, actually, especially during Christmas,” he added.
This was seconded by OCTA Research group fellow and University of the Philippines’ Institute of Mathematics Professor Dr. Guido David that the probability of hitting six numbers out of 55 numbers is “1 out of 30 million.”
Despite this, if there is a pattern there is a possibility.
“Maybe there is a possibility because there is a pattern, it means more people bet on this sequence of numbers because there is a pattern, so we are not saying it is impossible,” said David in an interview with DZBB.
But in the matter of more than 400 winners, David doubts it.
“The probability of 400 winning at the same time is very small.”
It can be recalled that Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III earlier also criticized the apparent irregularity in the number of lottery draw winners and requested that there be an investigation into it. RNT/JGC
